British Columbia will not automatically switch you to Dexedrine while you wait for Special Authority on a CADDRA first-line ADHD medication. Any change of drug is a clinical decision by a licensed prescriber, and CADDRA guidelines do not bind PharmaCare. PharmaCare is the provincial drug program; Medical Services Plan covers medically required physician services, not prescriptions; private insurance is a third layer. Coverage varies by province. Coverage varies by insurance plan. Rules, coverage and referral pathways vary by province and can change; confirm the current position with the relevant institution or provincial program. Different story, also just mine in B.C. I stayed on generic methylphenidate tablets while Special Authority was pending and nobody mentioned Dexedrine at all. My friend's clinician used Dexedrine as the trial drug instead. CADDRA's chart was on the desk, but the pharmacist still billed according to PharmaCare, not the chart. I am sharing a personal timeline, not a rule for anyone else in the province.

This is only my personal experience in B.C., not a province-wide rule. While my Concerta Special Authority sat in processing, my prescriber suggested a short Dexedrine trial so the form would show an immediate-release dextroamphetamine attempt. PharmaCare did not "switch" me; the doctor chose it. The Dexedrine made me jittery and we stopped. I am not saying every patient will be offered Dexedrine while waiting.
