Can I see a doctor for ADHD as a teenager in Ontario if my parents do not believe ADHD is real?

A teenager in Ontario who is capable of consenting can see a doctor about possible ADHD even if parents do not believe ADHD is real; Ontario does not use one fixed birthday as the only test for treatment consent. The Health Care Consent Act is capacity-based: the clinician decides whether you understand the proposed assessment or treatment and the consequences of agreeing or refusing. Canadian Paediatric Society guidance on medical decision-making in paediatrics also centres capacity rather than a parent's opinion of whether ADHD exists. OHIP covers medically necessary physician and nurse practitioner services in Ontario, so a walk-in or other insured visit can be a starting point when you are unattached or cannot use the family doctor, but a clinician may still limit the visit to screening and referral rather than starting stimulants in episodic care. Different experience, also just mine, and only personal experience. I waited until I felt clearly able to consent and then saw a physician in Ontario without my parents in the room. They still wanted collateral history, which made things awkward at home later. A classmate's family doctor refused to discuss ADHD at all. I am not claiming Ontario works the same for every teen.

This is only my personal experience as a teenager in Ontario, not a template for others. My parents did not believe ADHD was real. I went to a walk-in on my own with my health card, explained I was capable of consenting, and they would not start medication but they did listen and discussed a referral. I am not saying every walk-in will even do that.
