Why do I react so strongly to small noises...is this related to ADHD or something else?
I get overwhelmed or irritated by small background noises like tapping, chewing, or clicking pens, even when other people barely notice them. I’ve heard sensory sensitivities can be common in people with ADHD, but I don’t fully understand why. Is this something clinicians see often, and does it have anything to do with attention or emotional regulation? Are there strategies or tools that actually help without feeling extreme? I’m trying to figure out whether this is a clue about ADHD or a separate issue altogether.

Heightened sensitivity to sound is common in ADHD and relates to sensory processing differences. The brain may struggle to filter background noise, meaning small sounds feel intrusive or overwhelming. This isn’t irritability or intolerance, it’s a filtering issue.
When cognitive load is already high, sensory input can become the tipping point. Noise sensitivity can overlap with anxiety or sensory processing differences, but it’s frequently reported in ADHD. Using noise-cancelling headphones, white noise, or quiet breaks isn’t avoidance, it’s regulation.
