Both effects come from related mechanisms, but they work somewhat separately: the blood sugar benefit comes largely from GLP-1 helping the pancreas release insulin appropriately after meals and reducing excess glucose production by the liver, while the weight effect comes mainly from appetite suppression and slower stomach emptying making you eat less overall. They tend to reinforce each other (losing weight also improves blood sugar control independently), but the medication isn't just "causing weight loss which then improves blood sugar". Both effects are directly driven by the drug.
