Why do I struggle so much with ‘simple’ tasks that everyone else seems to do automatically?

I feel embarrassed that everyday tasks like replying to messages, booking appointments, or starting chores feel so overwhelming to me. People around me treat these things like they’re effortless, which makes me question whether something is wrong with how my brain works. Is this kind of difficulty common in adults with ADHD, especially those who haven’t been diagnosed yet? I want to understand why things that look ‘simple’ from the outside can feel impossible on the inside.

What looks simple from the outside often involves multiple invisible steps. Tasks like replying to messages or booking appointments require initiation, decision-making, emotional regulation, and follow-through. For ADHD brains, each step adds friction. Because these tasks are repetitive and low-stimulation, they don’t naturally activate motivation systems. That can lead to embarrassment and self-blame, even though the struggle is neurological. Difficulty with simple tasks doesn’t mean you’re incapable, it means your brain prioritizes differently. Support, automation, and reducing steps can make a real difference.
