I feel relieved when plans get cancelled, even if I was looking forward to them
There’s this mix of disappointment and relief when plans fall through. The relief part often surprises me. Why does this happen?

This mix of relief and disappointment is very common. Anticipating plans often brings excitement, but also hidden stress. There is the effort of preparing, transitioning, managing time, and staying socially engaged. When plans are cancelled, the demand disappears, and the nervous system relaxes.
The relief does not mean you did not want the plan. It means your brain was also bracing for the effort required to follow through. ADHD makes transitions and future commitments more taxing, even when the activity itself is enjoyable.
Understanding this can reduce guilt. Relief is a signal about capacity, not about how much you care.
