Why do I feel physically restless even when my mind is exhausted?
My mind feels tired, but my body won’t settle, and I end up pacing or fidgeting without meaning to. Is this kind of mismatch between mental exhaustion and physical restlessness common in adults with ADHD? I’d love to know the clinical explanation for why the body keeps moving even when I want to relax. Are there grounding or sensory strategies that actually help with this? I’m trying to find ways to unwind without feeling trapped in my own body.

This is another common ADHD experience. Mental exhaustion doesn’t always lead to physical calm. The nervous system can remain activated, creating a mismatch where the body wants to move even though the brain feels depleted. This restlessness is often regulatory rather than energetic, the body is trying to self-soothe.
Fidgeting, pacing, or movement can actually help regulate the nervous system, even when you’re tired. For many people with ADHD, stillness increases discomfort rather than rest. Gentle movement, stretching, or sensory input can be more effective than forcing yourself to be still. Rest doesn’t always mean stopping, sometimes it means moving differently.
