How can I explain ADHD to family members who still think it’s ‘just laziness’?

Some people in my family still dismiss ADHD as an excuse for not trying hard enough, and it really hurts. I’d like to explain it in a way that’s simple but still medically accurate so they understand it’s a real condition, not just me being dramatic. Are there phrases, metaphors, or explanations you find helpful when talking to sceptical relatives? I’m hoping to shift the conversation from blame to understanding, without starting a full-on argument every time it comes up.

It can help to focus on effort versus outcome. ADHD isn’t about not trying, it’s about difficulty regulating attention, energy, and action despite trying. Using concrete examples often lands better than abstract explanations. That said, not everyone will understand, and that isn’t your failure. You’re allowed to prioritize your well-being over convincing others. Sometimes the most important shift is internal, knowing that their disbelief doesn’t define your reality.
