This pattern is incredibly common in ADHD and it is not procrastination in the way people usually think about it. ADHD brains often struggle to generate motivation from importance alone. Instead, motivation is driven by urgency, novelty, or emotional intensity. A deadline creates a real sense of pressure that activates the nervous system and boosts dopamine, which temporarily improves focus and task initiation. For weeks before the deadline, the task may feel abstract and hard to access. As the deadline approaches, it becomes concrete and emotionally charged, which makes it easier for the brain to engage. This is why productivity can suddenly spike, even though the underlying ability was always there. The downside is that relying on deadlines is exhausting and reinforces cycles of stress and burnout. Many ADHD supports aim to create earlier, gentler forms of urgency so everything does not have to happen at the last minute.
