In ADHD, the brain’s reward system responds strongly to novelty but adapts quickly. Rewards that feel motivating at first can lose their impact once they become predictable. This isn’t a lack of appreciation or gratitude. It’s how dopamine signaling works in ADHD.
Clinicians often recommend immediate, varied, and meaningful rewards rather than long term or repetitive ones. External rewards alone usually aren’t enough. Tasks work better when they’re paired with interest, urgency, or connection to personal values. When rewards stop working, it’s a signal to change the system, not a personal failure.
