Why do I feel like my ADHD symptoms suddenly got worse in my late 20s?
I've been noticing that things I used to manage okay have gotten a lot harder the last couple of years. I’m not sure if this is normal for adults who might have ADHD or if something else is going on with me. It feels like stress and responsibilities have increased, but my ability to keep up hasn't. Could undiagnosed ADHD get more obvious as life gets more complicated? I'd love to understand what's actually happening and whether this is something doctors see often.

This is incredibly common and often misunderstood. ADHD symptoms don’t suddenly appear in adulthood, but the supports that once compensated for them often disappear. School provided structure, deadlines, external accountability, and clear expectations. Adult life replaces that with self direction, multitasking, and constant decision making.
Late 20s is also when life complexity spikes. Careers become more demanding, relationships deepen, finances matter more, and there’s less margin for error. Hormonal changes, sleep disruption, stress, and burnout can all amplify ADHD symptoms that were previously manageable.
Many people don’t realize they’ve been coping until the coping breaks. That doesn’t mean ADHD is getting worse. It means the environment is asking more of your executive functioning than before.
