Is it normal to relate to ADHD but not have issues with hyperactivity?

I always thought ADHD meant being physically hyper, but that’s not really me. What I do struggle with is losing track of things, zoning out, and constantly forgetting what I was doing. Does ADHD look different for adults, especially if you’re more inattentive? I’m trying to figure out if this is something worth getting checked out.

Yes, absolutely. ADHD does not always involve physical hyperactivity, especially in adults. Many people have inattentive type ADHD, where the hyperactivity shows up internally rather than outwardly. Instead of running around, the mind is busy, jumping between thoughts, replaying conversations, or struggling to stay anchored to one task. Adults often say things like “I’m not hyper, I’m exhausted.” That’s because years of internal overdrive leads to mental fatigue rather than visible restlessness. Hyperactivity can also diminish with age or be masked by coping strategies like perfectionism, over preparation, or avoidance. So if you relate strongly to attention issues, distractibility, forgetfulness, or mental overwhelm but not physical hyperactivity, that still fits very comfortably within ADHD.
