ADHD can make emotional reactions feel bigger and harder to control. Emotional regulation is part of executive function, so small stressors can trigger disproportionately intense responses. This does not mean the stressor is actually small to the nervous system. When capacity is already maxed out, even minor disruptions can tip things over. Many adults describe feeling embarrassed afterward and wondering why they reacted so strongly. Clinicians emphasize that this is not immaturity or drama. It is reduced buffering capacity in the moment, often worsened by fatigue or stress.
