Yes. This is a very real and very common experience, especially in adults with ADHD. That heavy, weighed down feeling is often what overwhelm feels like in the body. When your brain is overloaded, your nervous system can shift into a shutdown or freeze response. Instead of feeling anxious or agitated, you feel physically slow, heavy, foggy, or glued in place. Getting up, moving, or starting anything can feel almost impossible, even though nothing is “wrong” with your body. Many people describe it as gravity turning up. Limbs feel heavy. Thinking feels effortful. Even small decisions feel exhausting. This is not laziness or lack of motivation. It is your system saying it has exceeded its processing capacity. In ADHD, overwhelm often builds quietly. Too many inputs, decisions, emotions, or unfinished tasks stack up, and the body takes the hit. Because ADHD brains already work harder to regulate attention and emotion, they can tip into this state faster. What helps is not pushing harder. Gentle regulation helps more. Reducing inputs, stepping away briefly, grounding your body, or doing one very small physical action can help signal safety again. Medication and external structure can also reduce how often this happens by lowering baseline overload. So yes, if overwhelm shows up as physical heaviness for you, that makes a lot of sense. Your body is communicating what your brain has been carrying.
