I live alone with no partner, flatmate or family nearby, and I really struggle to stay on top of basic life admin and housework. A lot of advice assumes someone else is around to remind you or help. What do you recommend to adult ADHD patients who are essentially solo in managing their day-to-day life?

Living alone with ADHD can be genuinely hard, and a lot of advice quietly assumes someone else is there to provide structure. When that support isn’t there, it does not mean you’re failing. It means you need different tools. What I usually focus on is helping people externalize structure so they are not relying on motivation or memory. Your environment becomes the support. Visual cues matter a lot. Things you need to do should be visible, not tucked away. If you don’t see it, it effectively doesn’t exist for an ADHD brain. I also encourage shrinking the definition of done. When you live alone, tasks can feel endless and heavy. We aim for good enough, not perfect. One load of laundry, not the whole system. Clearing one surface, not the whole apartment. Consistency beats intensity. Routines work best when they are anchored to something that already happens. Coffee equals meds and breakfast. Getting home equals a five minute reset. You are not creating discipline from scratch, you are attaching actions to existing habits. Technology can stand in for people. Timers, reminders, recurring checklists, even body doubling apps or virtual co working sessions can provide that external nudge without shame. Most importantly, we work on reducing self blame. Managing life solo with ADHD takes energy. Struggling does not mean you are lazy or broken. It means your brain was never meant to do everything alone without support. The goal is not to run your life perfectly. It is to build a system that holds you up when no one else is there, and to do it with kindness toward yourself.
