Why is nicotine so hard to avoid when taking ADHD medication?

I'm currently in university, and almost a year into my ADHD diagnosis. Throughout the past year I was on and off using nicotine pouches, and I always found it harder to avoid them when I was on my meds (vyvanse, 30mg). Interestingly, on days where I didn't take my medication, I had zero cravings for nicotine. Yet, when I did take them, I could hardly go an hour without the thought popping into my mind. The title question is a bit misleading, because what I'd really like to know is if there are any strategies you would suggest to avoid nicotine while on ADHD medication. Are there any proven methods to combat the intensified cravings caused by the meds?

The question I have is what ADHD medication are you taking? If you are receiving the extended-release dextroamphetamine-amphetamine (60 or 80 mg/day) you may find you have a decrease in the cravings. If you are looking for a non-medical way to stop the cravings I have found in practice that certain nutrients are intertwined with brain chemistry. Magnesium and zinc serve as cofactors in neurotransmitter metabolic pathways, influencing how serotonin and dopamine are produced and regulated. Iron in the brain particularly support dopaminergic activity and neural development. Low iron levels have been linked to smaller regional brain volumes, including the left hippocampus. This is an area very important to learning and memory. Vitamins B9 and B12 are essential for healthy nervous system development and function. Omega-3 fatty acids stabilize membranes and reduce inflammation in the brain. Many Western diets are high in processed foods and low in micronutrients, are correlated with smaller hippocampal volume and higher ADHD symptom severity. In contrast, nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory diets appear to support healthier neurotransmission and more balance behavior. So to answer your question, an easy way to support your ADHD and decrease the nicotine cravings is to stay away from processed food, sugary products and eat nutrient dense foods to fuel your brain.
