3 months on guanfacine (Intuniv) as an adult — the non-stimulant nobody talks about
Nobody talks about guanfacine so let me be the one.
Context: blood pressure issues, stimulants vetoed by my doctor before we even started. Three months on Intuniv XR now, 45M in Québec.
Week one: do not schedule anything important. I could have fallen asleep mid-handshake. It passes (mostly by week three).
What it actually does: the background restlessness — that engine-always-idling feeling — is maybe 60% quieter. I interrupt people visibly less. Bonus: my BP numbers improved, which made my doctor suspiciously happy.
What it does not do: hand you focus on command. It's turning down static, not turning up signal. If you came for the laser-brain stimulant experience, this isn't that.
Real question though: I keep reading about combining it with a low-dose stimulant. Is that an actual clinical practice or an internet invention?

On the combo question: it's real clinical practice (my psychiatrist called it augmentation), but she declined it in MY case specifically because of blood pressure — which given your history is probably the exact conversation you'd have. The internet generalizes what is a completely case-by-case call. Ask your prescriber, not the forum.

Three weeks into guanfacine and deep in the sleepy phase — this post is the hope I needed. The 'turning down static, not turning up signal' line is the most accurate description of a non-stimulant I've read on this forum. Screenshot saved for the next person who asks me what it's like.
