Why are wait times for ADHD care so long?

ADHD care often involves specialized assessment, longitudinal follow up, and careful medication management. Demand has increased significantly, especially among adults, while the number of trained providers has not kept pace. This creates long bottlenecks in care. ADHD is also still under prioritized in many health systems, despite its impact on functioning and mental health. Limited funding, long referral pathways, and fragmented services all contribute to delays. Long wait times are frustrating and invalidating, but they reflect system strain rather than a lack of legitimacy of ADHD as a condition.
