Should I tell someone I’m dating that I’m on ADHD meds?
I’m newly dating and unsure whether to mention my diagnosis or medication. Is there any clinical or practical guidance on when (or whether) to disclose, especially to avoid stigma?

There is no clinical requirement to disclose ADHD or medication early in dating, and most clinicians frame this as a personal choice, not a moral obligation.
Disclosure is usually guided by safety, relevance, and trust. ADHD medication is not something a dating partner needs to know unless it affects shared situations, like sleep, routines, or substance use conversations, or unless the relationship is becoming emotionally significant. Taking medication is a health decision, not a confession.
Clinically, many people benefit from waiting until there is some relational safety. Early dating is often about compatibility, not full transparency. You are allowed to gather information about the other person before offering something vulnerable. Disclosure works best when it feels contextual rather than defensive.
Some people choose to share indirectly first, mentioning how they manage focus or stress, and seeing how that is received. That response often tells you more than the disclosure itself.
Stigma is real, and your hesitation is reasonable. The right time is when sharing feels like it would increase understanding, not put you in a position to educate, justify, or protect yourself. A supportive response is a green flag. A dismissive one is useful information.
Clinically, the goal is agency. You get to decide when, how, and if this part of your life is shared.
