This is a really important thing to think about, and a lot of people only realize it after they’ve already started care. Beyond the assessment itself, ADHD treatment usually has a few ongoing cost layers. Follow ups are one. Early on, appointments are more frequent for titration and adjustment, then they space out once things are stable. It’s worth asking upfront what the follow up rhythm and cost structure look like so there are no surprises. Medication costs vary a lot. Generic stimulants are often quite affordable, especially with insurance, but long acting formulations or newer options can be more expensive. Non stimulants like atomoxetine can also vary. Coverage matters, and sometimes the most clinically appropriate option isn’t the cheapest one, which can be frustrating. Pharmacy fees add up too, especially with monthly dispensing. There are also indirect costs people don’t always anticipate. Therapy, ADHD coaching, or skills based support can be incredibly helpful but may not be fully covered. Some people choose short term focused therapy rather than ongoing sessions to manage cost and energy. Time and energy are part of the cost as well. Appointments, pharmacy trips, tracking symptoms, and advocating for accommodations all take bandwidth. That’s not a reason not to pursue care, but it’s realistic to name it. Good clinicians are open to these conversations. You’re allowed to ask about cost effective options, spacing of follow ups, flexible medication use, and what support is optional versus essential. ADHD care should be sustainable, not another source of stress.
