When I explain my struggles, I worry people think I’m deflecting responsibility. How do clinicians suggest framing ADHD in conversations?

This is such a common fear, especially for adults who’ve spent years being told to try harder. One helpful shift is separating explanation from excuse. Explaining ADHD is about naming the barrier, not avoiding responsibility. You can acknowledge impact while still owning outcomes. For example, “I struggle with time estimation, so I use reminders and check ins to stay on track.” Clinicians often encourage focusing on solutions when talking about ADHD. When people see that you’re actively working around your brain, it reframes the conversation. You’re not deflecting responsibility, you’re being accurate about how you function. That honesty usually builds more trust, not less.
