If a student is struggling but hasn’t been formally diagnosed yet, can schools still provide accommodations, or is a diagnosis required?

Not always. Many schools can provide informal supports based on observed needs, even without a formal diagnosis. This might include extra time, modified workload, or classroom strategies.
A formal diagnosis can make accommodations more consistent and protected, especially as academic demands increase. However, support should not be withheld simply because a label is pending.
The goal is reducing barriers to learning, not waiting for proof of struggle. Early support can prevent unnecessary stress and secondary mental health issues.
