Atomoxetine increases norepinephrine (and indirectly dopamine) specifically in the prefrontal cortex, while guanfacine and clonidine enhance the stability of prefrontal networks by stimulating α2A receptors. These mechanisms strengthen top‑down control, reduce distractibility, and support emotional regulation without triggering the reward pathways that stimulants affect.
