I've had anxiety for years and I feel more irritable, avoidant and less fun than I used to be. From your clinical experience, does chronic anxiety genuinely change how people present in the world, or is it more like a lens over the same personality underneath?

Yes, it can. Chronic anxiety can make someone appear more irritable, withdrawn, rigid, or less spontaneous than they truly are. Over time, people adapt to feeling on edge by avoiding risks, overcontrolling situations, or limiting social exposure. On the outside, that can look like a personality shift. But often it is a protective layer, not a core change. When anxiety is treated, many people reconnect with parts of themselves that felt lost. It is not that your personality disappeared. It has just been guarded.
