Why does my kid hyperfocus on games but not homework?

This is such a common frustration. ADHD is not a lack of focus. It is difficulty regulating focus. Games are fast, stimulating, and provide immediate reward feedback. They light up the dopamine system in a way that homework often does not. Homework usually requires sustained effort, delayed reward, and internal organization. That is exactly where executive functioning is challenged. It is not about caring less. It is about how the brain responds to stimulation. We work on making tasks more engaging, breaking them into smaller chunks, adding external structure, and sometimes optimizing medication timing. Hyperfocus shows the capacity is there. The challenge is redirecting it.
