Burnout or a “crash” as medication wears off can sometimes happen, especially with stimulant medications. It may feel like sudden fatigue, irritability, low motivation, brain fog, or feeling emotionally drained. A few things can help, including staying well hydrated, getting adequate sleep, and making sure you are eating enough throughout the day. A high-protein meal with healthy fats can be especially helpful for keeping your energy more stable. Some patients also find L-theanine around noon helpful for promoting a calmer, more balanced feeling, although evidence for preventing a stimulant crash specifically is limited. Try to give yourself breaks rather than expecting yourself to be productive the entire time your medication is working. How long to leave between doses depends on the medication, formulation, dose, and your prescription, so I would not recommend changing the timing without speaking with your provider. If the crash is happening consistently, book a follow-up. Sometimes a small adjustment to the dose, timing, or formulation can make the day feel much smoother.
