First office job, 26, completely fried — is this burnout or ADHD finally catching up with me?
School worked for me, is the thing. Deadlines, timetables, someone else's structure — I ran fine inside that exoskeleton. Eighteen months into my first office job (open calendar, "self-directed," a manager who says "no rush" and means it) and I am drowning: can't start anything, working nights to hide it, tired in a way sleep doesn't touch.
Everyone in my life says burnout, take a vacation. But this doesn't feel like depletion. It feels like everyone else got issued machinery I never had, and school was just hiding it. 26M, Ontario. How do clinicians pull apart burnout from ADHD that was masked by structure until the structure got removed? Because the vacation did nothing.

The exoskeleton metaphor is the whole thing. Same arc: fine in school (deadlines were load-bearing), fell apart at my first 'flexible' job. The tell that it wasn't burnout, in retrospect: rest didn't restore me. Burnout responded to my three-week vacation by waiting patiently for my return; the task-initiation wall came WITH me to the beach. That distinction — depletion vs missing machinery — is apparently exactly the axis clinicians probe.

Both can be true, annoyingly: I had ADHD-driven overwork masking, which produced genuine burnout ON TOP. Treating one didn't fix the other. Flagging because the either/or framing cost me a year — if the structure-removal story fits AND you're depleted, bring both to the assessment and let them sequence it.
