I instantly freeze when someone needs something urgently even if it's simple. Does this happen to anyone else?

This freeze response is common in ADHD and is often linked to overwhelm rather than defiance. When a demand appears suddenly, the brain has to switch tasks, prioritize, and initiate action all at once. That spike in cognitive load can trigger a shutdown. It can feel embarrassing or confusing, especially when the request is simple. The issue is not willingness. It is the abrupt demand on executive function. Having a moment to pause or clarify can help reduce this response.
