Holding it together socially and professionally takes a lot of regulation. If you’re monitoring your reactions, masking symptoms, managing emotions, and staying focused, your nervous system is working overtime. Once the day ends, that sustained effort drops and exhaustion hits. Clinicians understand this as emotional and cognitive fatigue from masking. It’s not weakness and it’s not introversion. It’s the cost of constant self regulation. Many adults don’t realize how much energy goes into appearing fine until they finally stop and feel the crash.
