This is one of the most confusing parts of ADHD. ADHD isn’t an inability to focus — it’s difficulty regulating focus. That's why the term attention "deficit" can be a misleading name for many individuals. Your brain doesn’t have a steady “volume knob” for attention. Instead, it responds strongly to certain inputs like interest, urgency, novelty, or emotional pull. When something hits that sweet spot, attention can lock in very tightly and you may find you really dial into to that for a period of time. That’s hyperfocus. The brain is getting enough stimulation to stay engaged, so it doesn’t drift — sometimes to the point of losing track of time, hunger, or surroundings. When tasks don’t provide that stimulation, the opposite happens. Focus becomes hard to access, even if you care or want to try. It’s not a choice. The brain just isn’t getting the signal it needs to stay online, so attention slips away despite your effort. This is why ADHD can feel so contradictory. You might struggle to answer emails or start chores, then spend hours absorbed in a project, hobby, or problem that really grabs you. From the outside it looks inconsistent. From the inside, it feels like your attention has a mind of its own. Clinicians often explain hyperfocus as attention being pulled rather than directed. You don’t switch it on intentionally — it happens when the conditions are right. That’s also why stopping hyperfocus can be hard; the brain doesn’t easily disengage once it’s locked in. Understanding this can be relieving. It shows that your brain is capable of deep focus — it just doesn’t deploy it on command. The challenge with ADHD isn’t having too little attention, but having attention that’s driven by interest and stimulation rather than plans or priorities. Thus, ADHD is much better understood as a difficulty in regulating your attention, rather than a deficit. And this is why hyperfocus occurs when you get those strong stimulation signals.
