hot-desking. two speakerphone guys. a walkway behind my monitor. by noon i've spent my entire focus budget on FILTERING and there's nothing left for the actual job. noise-cancelling headphones recover maybe 40%. québec, 29F, not disclosed at work (and honestly not sure i want to). what setups or accommodations have genuinely worked for people in open offices? and the harder question — how did you ask for them without turning it into A Whole Thing with HR? low-key solutions especially welcome, i mostly just want my afternoons back.

The disclosed version, for comparison: went through HR with a generic medical note ('condition requiring a low-distraction work environment' — no diagnosis named, which is allowed). Result: two fixed WFH days + screen placement changes. Slower than the direct-manager route, but it survives a manager change. Both paths exist; choose based on how much you trust your particular chain of humans.

Open office, not disclosed either. What worked without ever saying 'ADHD': I asked for a 'focus accommodation' in pure productivity terms — desk facing the wall, two bookable 2-hour blocks in a closed room, headphones = official do-not-disturb. Manager said yes in five minutes because I brought a solution, not a case file. HR never entered the picture.
