What does your psychiatrist actually look at before agreeing to switch your ADHD med?
I'll be honest about my fear here: I want to ask about switching off Concerta after a year of "it's okay I guess" results, but stimulants being controlled substances makes me paranoid that asking = looking like a drug seeker. Probably irrational. Still. What actually goes into that decision from the clinician's side? Is "it works but I don't love it" a legitimate reason, or do they need to see something more concrete before they'll move you? 38M, Québec, one year in.

The thing that reads as drug-seeking (my NP told me this straight up when I asked) isn't asking to switch — it's asking for a specific med by name with no symptom story attached. Bring the 'what's not working' list and let them propose the what's-next. Same destination, opposite optics.

For what it's worth, I rehearsed my 'please don't think I'm drug-seeking' speech for weeks and my psychiatrist's actual response was '...you're describing a normal medication review.' The fear is real but it's mostly ours. Saying 'it works but the trade-offs bother me' is apparently a completely standard Tuesday for them.
