Receiving a late diagnosis of ADHD can bring a sense of relief, as it helps make sense of long-standing difficulties and opens the door to appropriate treatment and support. At the same time, it is common for other emotions to emerge, such as sadness, anger, or grief. These reactions are entirely valid and often reflect a sense of loss related to what might have been different had adequate support been available earlier in life.
It can be helpful to acknowledge these emotions while also recognizing personal strengths and past and current achievements. This perspective may support a more compassionate understanding of one’s life course and facilitate a constructive and forward-looking therapeutic process.
