Adult ADHD assessment in Alberta: my route through a psychologist + what AHS did and didn't cover

My family doctor's actual words: "but you did fine in school." So that route stalled. Here's what worked instead — Calgary, 27M, seven weeks total. Self-referred to a registered psychologist for an adult assessment (no referral needed in AB): ~$1,800 across three sessions. AHS covers zero of that, know it going in. Report in hand, back to the same skeptical GP — who read it, accepted it, and started medication management herself. No psychiatrist ever involved. Two money notes: employer benefits reimbursed $500/year under "registered psychologist" — check yours, it's a standard category. And in hindsight I'd have brought childhood evidence to the GP FIRST and asked for a covered referral before paying out of pocket. Give them the chance to say yes cheaply before you buy the expensive yes.
