I've always been messy, late and forgetful, but so are quite a few of my friends. From your diagnostic point of view, what separates actual ADHD from a personality style of being disorganised or a bit scattered, especially in adults who managed to do reasonably well at school?

We look at pattern, persistence, and impairment. Everyone is disorganized at times. ADHD involves lifelong executive functioning challenges that show up across multiple settings. Symptoms usually begin in childhood, even if they were overlooked. We assess attention, task initiation, time management, forgetfulness, emotional regulation, and how much effort is required to function. If disorganization is chronic, impairing work or relationships, and consistent over time, it may reflect ADHD rather than personality style. Context matters.
