What’s the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, and my GP when it comes to ADHD?

I get confused about who does what in the mental health system. Who can diagnose ADHD, who can prescribe meds, and who helps with ongoing support? I’m not familiar with any of this since I haven’t needed specialists before. A simple breakdown would really help me figure out who I should even book with.

When it comes to ADHD, different professionals play different but complementary roles, and it can be confusing to know who does what. A GP (family doctor) is often the first point of contact. They can listen to concerns, screen for ADHD, rule out physical causes (like thyroid or sleep issues), and make referrals. In most provinces, GPs may help with ongoing monitoring or prescribing once a diagnosis and treatment plan are established, but they usually do not make a full ADHD diagnosis on their own. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. Psychiatrists can do a comprehensive ADHD assessment, diagnose ADHD, consider other mental health conditions that may overlap or mimic ADHD, and prescribe medication. They also monitor response, side effects, and adjust treatment over time. A psychologist is trained in assessment and therapy but does not prescribe medication. Psychologists often provide detailed diagnostic assessments, help clarify how ADHD affects thinking, emotions, and behaviour, and offer evidence-based therapies such as CBT, skills training, or coaching-style interventions for ADHD. A therapist (such as a counsellor, social worker, or psychotherapist) focuses on practical and emotional support. Therapy can help with coping skills, self-esteem, relationships, stress, and the day-to-day impact of ADHD, even though therapists usually don’t diagnose ADHD or prescribe medication. For many people with ADHD, the best care involves a team approach, with each professional supporting a different part of treatment and functioning.
