This is a very common response in people with ADHD, and it’s often misunderstood as emotional avoidance or numbness. What’s usually happening is nervous system overload. When too much information, emotion, or demand hits at once, the brain can’t regulate effectively, so instead of reacting outwardly, it goes into a freeze or shutdown mode. It’s protective, not intentional. In ADHD, emotional regulation is part of executive functioning. When that system is overloaded, emotions don’t flow smoothly. They either come out intensely or go quiet altogether. Shutting down can look like zoning out, going blank, feeling detached, or needing to withdraw. It doesn’t mean you don’t care. It means your system has hit capacity. Many adults don’t realize this is dysregulation because it doesn’t look dramatic. But it’s still a sign that the brain is overwhelmed, not weak.
