Why does caffeine calm me down instead of making me more alert?

I drink a lot of coffee and people always say it should make you jittery, but honestly it does the opposite for me. It makes me feel more settled and actually able to focus. Is that something doctors recognise in people with ADHD, or am I just imagining it? I'm wondering if this is a sign that stimulants work differently for me

This is actually very common in people with ADHD and it doesn’t mean caffeine is “working backwards.” ADHD brains tend to run under stimulated in the parts responsible for focus and regulation. Caffeine increases dopamine and norepinephrine, which are the same neurotransmitters targeted by ADHD medications. For some people, that extra stimulation doesn’t cause jitteriness, it brings the brain closer to an optimal level of alertness. When your brain is no longer scrambling for stimulation, it can feel calmer, quieter, and more focused. Another factor is baseline mental restlessness. If your mind is constantly racing, caffeine can reduce that internal noise by improving signal clarity, not by speeding you up. That’s why some people with ADHD feel sleepy after coffee. Their nervous system finally relaxes once it’s adequately stimulated. This isn’t diagnostic on its own, but it’s a pattern clinicians hear a lot during ADHD assessments.
