Emotional numbness in ADHD is often understood as a response to chronic overload rather than absence of emotion. When emotional regulation systems are taxed for a long time, the nervous system can shift into a muted or flat state as a form of self protection.
This can look like feeling disconnected, indifferent, or unable to access strong emotions, even though you know you care. Clinicians consider context, stress levels, and whether numbness alternates with periods of emotional intensity. In ADHD, both extremes can coexist as part of dysregulation rather than a mood disorder on their own.
