Is emotional shutdown a thing in ADHD adults?
I suddenly shut down when emotions get too much. Is that ADHD?

Yes. Emotional shutdown can happen when feelings become too intense or overwhelming. The nervous system may switch into a protective numb or disconnected state.
This is not avoidance or indifference. It is a regulation response to overload. Many adults with ADHD alternate between emotional intensity and shutdown.
Recognizing early signs of overload can help prevent reaching that point.
