When a patient describes feeling emotionally ‘numb’, what do you look for clinically?
I don't feel intense sadness; I just feel flat and disconnected from things I used to care about. How do you work out whether that kind of numbness is part of depression, trauma-related, a medication side-effect, or something else entirely?

Emotional numbness can be depression, trauma response, burnout, medication side effects, or severe anxiety. I assess mood, sleep, appetite, concentration, and interest in activities. I ask about trauma history and stress load. I also review current medications. Numbness is not the absence of illness. It is often the nervous system shutting down to cope. Understanding the context helps guide treatment.
