I'm exhausted, unmotivated and detached from my work, but I'm not sure if this is 'just' burnout or something closer to depression. From a psychiatric perspective, what key differences do you look for when distinguishing job burnout from a major depressive episode?

Burnout is typically tied to a specific context, often work related, and may improve with rest or change in environment. Depression tends to be more pervasive, affecting multiple areas of life and accompanied by persistent low mood, loss of pleasure, sleep changes, appetite changes, and negative self thoughts. There can be overlap. Duration, severity, and functional impact help differentiate. Sometimes both are present.
