I’m worried about stigma, but I also need support. Do I have to formally disclose an ADHD diagnosis to request accommodations, or are there alternatives?

You usually do not have to disclose your ADHD diagnosis to your manager to get accommodations, and many adults choose not to. In most workplaces, what’s required is disclosure of functional need, not a detailed diagnosis. That means you can ask for specific supports based on how you work best, without naming ADHD. For example, requesting written instructions, quieter space, flexible deadlines, or fewer interruptions can often be framed as productivity supports rather than medical disclosure. If formal accommodations are needed, documentation is typically handled through HR or an accessibility office, not your direct supervisor. Even then, the letter usually confirms that you have a medically recognized condition and outlines recommended accommodations. It does not need to name ADHD explicitly, and it does not include your history, symptoms, or medication details. Some people choose to disclose the diagnosis because they have a trusting manager or feel it will help with understanding. Others prefer to keep it private and focus on function. Both approaches are valid. Disclosure is a strategic decision, not a requirement. If stigma is a concern, it’s reasonable to start small. Ask for the support you need in neutral, work focused language. If that’s not sufficient, you can escalate through formal channels later with documentation. You’re allowed to protect your privacy and still ask for support. Accommodations exist to help you do your job well, not to label you.
