Non-stimulant medications can still make changes in the brains of people with ADHD. They are not as quickly impactful as the first-line stimulants that are used and this can be frustrating. But they are sometimes safer to use for people who have underlying health issues that make stimulants inappropriate or if they suffer from intolerable side effects when using stimulants. They are also sometimes added to typical stimulant medications for a more complete response. Non-stimulants can help reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity, sustained attention and emotional regulation. These effects take up to 8 weeks to be fully appreciated, but can offer very safe long-term treatment options either with or without traditional stimulants.
