BC folks: is there any realistic public route to an adult ADHD assessment, or is private the only way?

Genuine question, not rhetorical despair: has anyone actually completed the PUBLIC route to an adult ADHD assessment in BC recently? Every single diagnosed adult I know here went private. If you got there via GP referral and a covered assessment — how long, which health region, and was there a trick to it? Victoria, 33M, would strongly prefer not to spend rent money but the sample size of public success stories I know personally is zero.

Half-completed data point: Vancouver Coastal, 14 months in the queue, gave up at month 9 and went private, then my public appointment finally arrived at month 14. So the public route 'works' in the sense that a bus eventually comes. Whether you can stand at the stop that long with your life intact is the real question the wait-time stats don't answer.

Completed it, Island Health, 2024-2025: GP referral → shared-care psychiatry program → assessed and returned to GP for management. Ten months. What made it work, honestly? My GP wrote 'functional impairment affecting employment' in the referral instead of just 'ADHD?'. The referral's wording sets your triage lane — a two-line referral gets a two-line priority.
