Yes, this is extremely common in ADHD and it’s not a personal failure. ADHD brains don’t automate habits the same way neurotypical brains do. Routines rely on consistent dopamine signals and internal time awareness, both of which are less reliable in ADHD. Early on, a routine may feel novel or motivating, so it works. Once the novelty wears off, the brain stops getting that reward signal and the routine quietly collapses. This is why people with ADHD often need flexible systems rather than rigid routines. It’s also why restarting routines repeatedly is normal. You’re not failing at routines. Your brain just needs more external cues, variety, and forgiveness built in.
