I tie my value to output, which feels especially painful with ADHD. How do clinicians address productivity-based self-worth?

Clinicians see this pattern often, especially in people with ADHD, because productivity is frequently used as a stand in for worth. Many adults learned early that praise, safety, or acceptance came from output. For someone with ADHD, inconsistency meant working harder to prove value. Over time, productivity becomes fused with identity. When output drops, worth feels threatened, not just performance. Clinically, the work starts by separating value from function. Productivity is something you do, not who you are. That sounds simple, but emotionally it takes repetition and lived experience. People are encouraged to notice how worth shows up outside of output, in relationships, values, care, creativity, humor, integrity. These often get ignored because they are harder to measure. There is also grief work. Letting go of productivity as identity can feel like losing the one thing that made you acceptable. Clinicians normalize that fear and help replace pressure driven motivation with value driven choices. Practically, this means redefining success in smaller, humane terms and allowing rest without moral judgment. ADHD does not take away your worth. It exposes how conditional that worth was made to feel. The goal is not to stop caring about productivity, but to stop using it as proof that you deserve to exist.
