I’ve had my concerns minimized or attributed to stress or hormones. Why are women’s ADHD concerns often dismissed?

Women with ADHD are often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed because their symptoms may look quieter or are attributed to stress, anxiety, or hormones. Many learn to mask early, which hides impairment and leads clinicians to underestimate their struggles. When concerns are minimized, it can reinforce self doubt and delay appropriate care. This dismissal is a systemic issue, not a reflection of the validity of your experience. Feeling unheard is unfortunately common, and it makes sense that it would be frustrating or invalidating. Finding providers who understand how ADHD presents across genders can make a significant difference in feeling seen and supported.
