It can really feel overwhelming, and many clinicians hear this question a lot. ADHD is not suddenly new. What is new is our ability and willingness to see it. Clinically, diagnostic criteria have broadened and improved. We now understand inattentive presentations, emotional regulation, and adult ADHD much better than we did even 10 to 15 years ago. That means people who were previously missed, especially women, girls, and high functioning adults, are finally being recognized. Socially, demands have changed. Modern life places a huge load on executive functioning. Constant digital input, multitasking, fewer natural routines, and higher productivity expectations expose attention and regulation difficulties that might have stayed hidden in more structured environments. ADHD did not increase overnight, but the mismatch between brains and expectations became harder to ignore. There is also less stigma. People are more open about mental health, neurodiversity, and identity. Social media has played a role here. While it can oversimplify things, it has also helped people name experiences they were privately struggling with and realize they are not alone. From a clinical lens, this rise in discussion is often a sign of delayed recognition rather than overdiagnosis. Many adults are being diagnosed now because the system did not catch them earlier. So yes, ADHD is talked about more. That does not mean it is being invented. It means language, awareness, and safety to speak up have finally caught up to lived experience.
