A commonly reported experience is initial disbelief or having to push back against assumptions (from others or even some providers) that diabetes "doesn't happen" at a younger age or lower weight, on top of processing the diagnosis itself. Connecting with the actual risk factor picture (family history, ethnicity, and other factors independent of the stereotype) sometimes helps make sense of a diagnosis that otherwise feels like it "shouldn't" apply.

Had more than one person assume I was joking when I mentioned my diagnosis given my age and weight. Took a while to stop needing to justify it to people and just focus on managing it.
